Sacred Installation: Sand Mandalas(2010)

 Sacred Installation: Sand Mandalas

To view and partake of the ceremonial construction of the intricately detailed and finely executed Buddhist Sand Mandala by Five monks from the Drepung Loseling Monastry in Mundgod, Karnataka over five days at the Indira Gandhi National Center for Arts at New Delhi was a sacred and rare experience.

5 Buddhist monks working on the Sand Mandala on the 4th day of the festival. This Mandala is said to evoke the presence of Avalokiteshvara, the Bodhisattva of compassion symbolized by the lotus in the center.

The Sand Mandala is a symbol that represents both the mind and body of the Buddha. It is a Tibetan Buddhist Tantric ritual practise of creating a symbolic representation of the universe.

The Tibetan word for "mandala," dkyil-‘khor , literally means "that which encircles a center. Mandalas are related to Tantric doctrines, normally kept secret, and can take many forms from simple diagrams and more elaborate scroll paintings on cloth to complicated patterns of colored sand and large three dimensional carved structures. They embody aspects of the Absolute, and are tools of meditation, initiation and visualization. According to Tibetan Buddhist history, the purpose, meaning and the techniques involved in the spiritual art of the sand mandala painting were taught by Buddha Sakyamuni in the 6th century B. C. in India.

There are many types of mandalas, used for various purposes in both the sutra and tantra practices of Buddhism. Formed of traditional prescribed iconography that includes geometric shapes and a multitude of ancient spiritual symbols, seed syllables, mantras, the sand-painted mandala is used as a tool or instrument for innumerable purposes such as to reconsecrate the earth and its inhabitants. Also used for healing purpose, their most profound symbolic value is that they embody the path to the sacred.

As a teaching tool and meditation on impermanence (a central teaching of Buddhism), the monks, after spending days or weeks in creating the intricate pattern of a sand mandala, they brush it together and place it in a body of running water to spread the blessings of the mandala.

In ancient times in Tibet, sand ground from brightly colored stone was often used for making the Mandalas. Today, white stones are ground and dyed with opaque water colors to produce the bright tones found in the sand paintings. The basic colors are white, black, blue, red, yellow, and green. Each of the basic colors have three to four shades- dark, medium, and light .

The basic configuration of a Mandala, which is deceptively simple in appearance, is a ring or circle enclosed in a symmetrical walled palace with a gateway in each wall facing one of four cardinal points of the compass. Sand is traditionally used because it demands great skill to create the Mandala’s exquisite details. Each individual grain of sand is charged with blessings, empowering the completed sand Mandala, 5 to 6 feet in diameter, with a vast store of spiritual energy. The creation of a sand Mandala is a prayer to a particular Meditation Deity, who may embody enlightened qualities ranging from compassion to heightened consciousness and bliss.

When constructing a sand mandala ,the surface is first cleaned and then consecrated. The mandala sand-painting process begins with an opening ceremony, during which the lamas, or Tibetan priests, consecrate the site and call forth the forces of goodness. They chant, declare intention, mudra, asana, pranayama, do visualisations, play music, recite mantras, etc. On the first day, the lamas begin by drawing an outline of the mandala to be painted on a wooden platform. Lengths of cords are dipped in wet chalk and then used to mark out an intrinsic system of measurements.

The following days see the laying of the colored sands, which is done by pouring the sand from traditional metal funnels called chak-pur. Each monk holds a chak-pur in one hand, while running a metal rod on its serrated surface; the vibration causes the sands to flow like liquid. They begin by working from the center and slowly moving outward. The center is symbolic of the inner meaning or illumination to which one reaches as they see, understand and realize the various outer levels of ignorance hiding it from one.

Every part of the Mandala exists in an intricate interplay with the others. Wherever you focus, the periphery of your vision changes to see the remainder differently. The Mandala does not just lie there. As you look at it, it moves. It seems almost alive.

The ‘centre’ Lotus, heart of the Sand Mandala

Everything is so deeply interconnected that everything causes everything else. And everything changes, moving as a vast flow of trillions of processes: There is no permanence, no lasting city, no separate and enduring thing -- not even a separate and enduring self. Dukkha: To believe otherwise is the main way human beings amplify suffering into a kind of vocation.

Knowing, really knowing these truths can lead to a sense of liberation that embraces joy and sorrow, life and death, daily routine and spiritual depth -- and that connects us compassionately with all beings in this web of existence that creates us as we create it.

And it is said to be possible then to see that the whole vast intricate enterprise of the universe is not meaningless matter but a great sacred whole, a Mandala, of which we are a part, in which all beings are ultimately destined, no matter their struggles to the contrary, to become enlightened.

After completion, the mandala was ceremonially dismantled and submerged in a body of water, symbolizing the transitory natuer of life.

Awakening of a mother

Awakening of a Mother

You were born of me

I call you mine

But I must remember

You have come through me

... you are your own, not mine

A being

With a path of your own

A journey your very own

For all those delicate moments

And countless fragile emotions

The delights and the butterflies

Yearnings to chart your flight

For all those aches and pain

And numerous impossible transitions

Tearings of growth and stretching

Making things happen with passion

Lest I think you are responsible

I must remember

You are a window

To a view, I else may not have viewed

Our paths enmeshed so fine

One ply ,it may appear

But you have only come through me

I have 'become' through you

you are your very own

I must remember

As I be, Me

Why Discipline is necessary?

मन का लक्षण नीर सा, चहुं दिस बिसरे जाए

जब संय्यम का बांध बने, तब ओजस जुड़ जाए

Nature of the mind is like water, when poured, it spreads in all directions (and today , there are innumerable distractions pulling it in different directions) ..it leaks all our energy .

With discipline ( eg. Maha vrata in Jain, Yama/  Niyama in Yoga, Shila in Bauddh marg) the distractions and leaks are plugged and Ojas (energy) accumulates by itself. Then, we can move far in the direction we aim.

Nature of discipline, may vary somewhat  with aim.. but no matter the aim, to stop the leakage and build focus is necessary.

While, in the world, our aims may appear different, in the inner realm, our only aim is to awaken and be free.

When the two become aligned, every breath, every step, becomes powerful and leaves a lasting impact.

Insight: Craving

We are addicted to the condition of Craving.

On fulfillment of one, we create a new desire and craving for it.

Why?

Because, Craving creates a short term focus and direction, a brief sense of purpose for our life energies and passing spurts of joy and achievement.

Before bringing pleasure on its fulfillment, this brings a sense of clarity and strength in the journey of its pursuit. We feel sensations of power in this experience of single-mindedness.

We don't know what to do in its absence. We feel empty, lost or less worthy.

So we keep creating new desires and cravings.

We lengthen and strengthen the desires and cravings to increase the level of pleasure and lengthen the experience of clarity and power.

This becomes Passion. It seems, then, to have a force of its own.

We become identified with it ie we feel one with it.

And so, the pattern continues, in a life defined as Samsara.

Dance...

i did not learn to dance...but i only gave myself to the music.. i only became aware of the inner rhythm and i learnt to surrender , to allow my body to move to it's tune...and then i even lost the music and simply whirled...only that is love, only that is joy, only that is ecstacy , only that is bliss, when i am one or.. when i am not ....only it

Creative process~Spiritual process

In a way, the spiritual process is to experientially move from form to formless, gross to subtle, matter to noneness and creative process is to manifest formless into form, subtle to gross and noneness to matter but essentially both point towards the same thing, coexistence of visible and invisible.

'Still...within' - some thoughts by Ranjan De

Finding the way to the Attic was like an active puzzle. Just off Sansad Marg, the way up discretely hidden alongside a tailoring shop, it was what made the inner space of that gallery too worth discovering.
It was like entering an inner sanctum of a meditative space.
The exhibition of drawings - drawn with force with soft graphite pencils primarily and other media was hidden in a curtained chamber.
In this chamber you were one with your thoughts in purveying and being one with Ritu Jain's creations. The chosen space lent itself to the meditative quality of her powerful yet serene concentric linear compostions.
They drew you in and drew you out. And the silence on that space was light, not at all unbearable as such a space could get, as though the drawings on the wall were lending their energy to that space, leaving and awakening your sense of inner calm.
In an alcove, a darker space stood a body form, enclosed in a bright vibrant spiraling clothing installation, quite different in the calmness of the space adjacent. This was a creation from her earlier body of work.
It was the only one, standing out like a goddess, wrapped in beams of energy rising to a crescendo. On a closer look a placer explaned to one what it was, but left to my own imaginings it had a far fascinating and moving impact.
Left to my self, I preferred the calm of the earlier space and I drifted back to it, going round and round like a dervish, like the lines in the drawings....

Woman

A girl
a woman
a daughter
a sister
a mother
a wife
a friend
a colleague
washing
cleaning
combing her hair
playing
holding
listening
working
tirelessly, silently
to make a space for herself
without losing herself
without altering herself
open and vulnerable
she walks
to allow all to see her
to permeate her being
to know her as she is
and in knowing
to know them selves reflected in turn
to accept her as she is
in turn to cleanse their own being
walking nude, so all may see their nudity
know the strength, the humility
the vulnerability, the pride
of being as creation made her to be
woman
cosmic mother

An insight...

Humans have a choice...to be or not to be, warm...and, to whom to be warm...all other forms of life are natural...choicelessly giving...exhuding presence. Thats why we need to save plant and animal life.Only human beings , knowingly or unknowingly lock it up in mental frameworks

 Still...within
by Aliashesh
The Spirit moves and does not keep still.  It moves away from the beginning and returns after going round the universe, to begin yet another cycle and yet another.

All those trajectories of the spirit form patterns.  The spirit is unmoving in its endless search for the eternal.

And the eternal eludes the search lying somewhere beyond; sometimes the eternal lies in the vacant spaces not covered by the paths of spirit.  Yet the search goes on without beginning and without end.

You only hear the intimations of the eternal sometimes, when you stand still and look at the whole process of yet another beginning and yet another.

That look dissolves all the yearnings and brings the search to its denouement.  There is no finale, only flowering.

Life is a movement of the spirit and the eternal is the stillness within the movement.

Devotion

"The woman stitches threads
that are subtle,
and the intensity
of her devotion
make them fine!" - from Monica O neal's quotes

Here 'woman' refers not to the  gender but the quality of the feminine which is naturally devotional. Sufi's aspire for the divine as their lover( saiyyan, kabir referred to 'sahib') while self being the female lover. Human being becomes receptive, a receptacle for something of the subtle to come through into the visible world. Kabir wrote poetry, Sufi's whirl to dissolve into the rhythm and then they become a shower of blessings. At the end of the whirling, the dervish moves through the audience with his skirt high up in the sky. this skirt is an umbrella taking all into the embrace of blessings . This quality exists in every human being and can,in a way, be cultivated.
Devotion has a wonderful quality to turn human endeavour into divine. Each one can aspire to become a conduit through every breath. It requires no training or instruction, simply a heart felt wish, that awakens one to the inner guide and gently leads the way most  appropriate for one...

From every day

It's interesting how we have found ways of connecting with our neighbours on facebook and twitter, than pick the phone or jump the wall... in a bid to connect with more people, more quickly...also, it takes more time

For some reason, a lot of people I vibe with tend to be atleast 10 years older than me . Here is what one of them recently wrote to me:

"Whenever my in-laws are here, we have a nice time, going out for a walk or to the shopping complex.  With advancing years, every small activity requires big effort and my f-i-law feels happy to have performed it.  He has a habit of greeting every one on the road.  He is bent from waist upwards and when he walks onlookers cannot help feel that he would fall any moment.  I hold his left hand.  So we become quite a sight on the road.  Two elderly women in the neighbourhood expressed their appreciation.  One said,"seeing you makes me feel so good," and the other said,"looking at you one gets positive energy".  This time we also added carrom to our activities.  Every evening we play carrom. "

He is/has been Director of educational institutions. What a wonderfully delightful and touching way of simply being and small acts that make a difference....

...a lot of what we do every day and brings quality to our life, has little to do with the political scams and such that dominate our media , unfortunately...

It's time to meditate

With the triple calamities that have struck Japan , never more is it necessary to meditate to raise our consciousness than now.

Why and how, some may ask? its time for action

To raise our consciousness that will allow us to see beyond the disaster and the destruction, to connect with the inner source of life and knowing, of  wisdom and direction to take correct action in the midst of this catastrophe, action's that arise from deep compassion and not despair. to raise the spirit of all , to send our positive vibes , to purify the subtle environment that silently strengthens all. In a subtle way we are all victims of this and affected by it...and so we can all be part of the healing process...right in our own homes and offices...

Being in Action

Peace and Joy
